Janmashtami 2023

Janmashtami 2023: Janmashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapad month of Shraavana, which is September 6 this year. This is one of the most significant Hindu holidays. It commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who conveyed the essential message of the “Bhagwat Gita,” the Hindu scripture that outlines the religion’s guiding principles. Mathura, where Lord Krishna was born, and Vrindavan, where he spent the majority of his childhood, commemorate the festival in particular. In temples dedicated to Krishna in India and other nations, rituals and prayers are performed.

JANMASHTAMI’S HISTORY

Lord Krishna was born in Mathura on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of the Bhadrapada month. He was Devaki and Vasudeva’s offspring. Mathura was ruled by Krishna’s uncle, King Kansa, who desired to murder his sister’s children because a prophecy foretold that the couple’s eighth child would bring about Kansa’s demise. After the prophecy, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and was responsible for the murders of their first six children. During the birth of their seventh child, Balram, the embryo was magically transferred from Devaki to Princess Rohini. The palace fell silent upon the birth of their eighth child, Krishna. Vasudeva rescued the infant and brought him to the home of Nand Baba and Yashodha in Vrindavan.

After the transaction, Vasudeva returned to the palace with a baby daughter and gave her to Kansa. As the evil king attempted to murder the infant, she transformed into the goddess Durga and foretold his destiny. This is how Krishna grew up in Vrindavan, eventually murdering his uncle Kansa. Approximately 80 percent of Nepal’s population identifies as Hindu and commemorates Krishna Janmashtami. On Janmashtami, they fast until midnight to commemorate the holiday.

Janmashtami is celebrated by Hindus all over the globe, not just in India. Janmashtami is a national holiday in Nepal and Bangladesh, for example. In addition, Lord Krishna has been venerated in Mauritius since the 18th century by ‘Jahazi Bhais,’ a caste-inclusive group.
