National Coffee Ice Cream Day 2023: HISTORY

Ice cream is the most comforting meal possible. It is the perfect ending to a delicious supper, and so is coffee. Why not combine the two to create something extraordinary? It requires effort! Although gelato and sorbet can be traced back to 3000 B.C. and coffee has been consumed since at least the 15th century, it took a considerable amount of time for coffee-flavored ice cream to emerge. Coffee may have been discovered in the Middle East in the 9th century, but it wasn’t considered a common household drink until after the 17th century, when it began to acquire popularity in Britain. The relationship between the French and the Ottomans paved the way for high society to introduce coffee to the globe. Eventually, Venetians worked out how to make coffee sweeter, and the beverage’s popularity skyrocketed.

At the request of the Roman emperor Nero, the first flavoured ice cream was created. His servants travelled to the highlands to gather snow for a frozen dessert flavoured with honey, nuts, and fruit. Gelato is generally ascribed to Bernardo Buontalenti, a native Florentine of the sixteenth century who served it to Catherine de’ Medici’s court. By 1770, Giovanni Basiolo had made a fortune in New York by selling semifrozen coffee and milk products that were popular in Genoa. In 1919, coffee ice cream reappeared in a cookbook after first appearing in a parfait in 1869. Today, it has become a staple on the flavour lists of most ice cream stores and is the ideal pick-me-up with a side of sweet, creamy goodness.
