Jamshedpur: In an appalling incident, seven people were killed in Burugulikera village of Gudri police station in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

It is alleged that the supporters of the Pathalgadi movement, on opposing Pathalgadi, first kidnapped these people and then took them to the forest and killed them brutally. The deceased include Upamukhiya and six other villagers. Police recovered their bodies on Wednesday.

According to the reports, the incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, though police received a late notice. At present, many police officials have been deployed in the area. The matter is under investigation.

Officials of Jharkhand Police said that all necessary steps are being taken. Local authorities have confirmed the deaths of seven people.

It has been reported that the work of submitting some documents was going on for the last 10-12 days by the supporters of Pathalgadi in Burugulikera village.

Meanwhile, on January 17, there was an incident of assault by Pathalgadi opponents on the supporters of Pathalgadi. Many Pathalgadi supporters were hurt in this incident.

On Sunday, violent clashes broke out again between the supporters of Pathalgadi and the opponents of Pathalgadi in which seven anti-Pathalgadi people were killed by the supporters of Pathalgadi.

Though no formal complaint has been filed with Gudri police in connection with the suspected killings, the police swung into action and started an intensive combing operation in the tribal belt.

For the uninitiated, Pathalgadi, or the tribal custom of erecting stone plaques to honor ancestors, was tweaked by some tribal villages in 2017-18 to assert land rights. The previous BJP government led by Raghubar Das had slapped sedition cases on many, which the Hemant Soren government revoked.
