Justice Ranjan Gogoi likely to be new Chief Justice of India

Justice Ranjan Gogoi to be the next Chief Justice of India. At present Gogoi is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court and will ascend to the seat of the CJI post Dipak Mishra’s retirement. His appointment will be done on the formal recommendations of the CJI Dipak Mishra who is retiring on October 2.

As per the existing Memorandum of Procedure, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has written to the CJI seeking his successor’s name. Justice Gogoi will take the oath of office on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti also the birthday of Justice Dipak Mishra.

It is also said that an unofficially known recommendation is ready to go on 2nd September making Ranjan Gogoi the next CJI. As per the general norms, the CJI recommends the senior most judge after him the in Supreme Court just a month before his retirement. Justice Mishra is to send the recommendation next week.

There are speculations on Chief Justice of India’s decision because of the press conference that was called by few senior judges of the Supreme Court including Justice Gogoi, Justice J Chelameshwar, Madan Lokur and Kurian Joseph.
