Kamakhya Railway Station Upgrade: The railway authorities in Assam have upgraded the essential facilities at Kamakhya Junction with a major step as a part of their preparations for the coming Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains.
The northeast frontier railway (NFR) has undertaken this work with the objective of turning the station into a modern maintenance facility and a service hub for these next-generation trains which will be beneficial not only to the passengers of the rest of the Northeast region but the whole country too.
At the end of November 2025, NFR formally finished the electrification of the two pit lines at Kamakhya Junction. The pit lines are the working places of the trains, particularly for up-to-date models like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat, the latter having electric systems that need periodic maintenance.
In addition to electrification, eight new pedestals have been put in place. These pedestals support the Panto (Panto) and Roof-Mounted Package Unit (RMPU) maintenances, which are the main components for the normal operation of the modern EMU-based train sets.
This in turn makes it possible for the railway staff to accomplish the technical works required for the trains in a safer, more efficient manner, and also conforming to the technological standards of these advanced trains.
On top of that, NFR also fully trained their entire maintenance staff.
The training was based on a series of modules covering safety in an electrified pit-line, Panto/RMPU servicing, and newly revised maintenance protocols to ensure the staff’s readiness in handling the technical demands of the new generation of trains.

NFR officials see the issue of this upgrade as a part of a bigger promise by Indian Railways to renew its facilities and embrace a carbon-neutral network by the year 2030. The electrification coupled with the modern maintenance facilities is bringing the region closer to efficient yet eco-friendly rail travel.

The upgrade at Kamakhya is perfectly timed with Indian Railways’ and NFR’s speeding up efforts to improve connectivity and rail infrastructure in Assam as well as in the entire Northeast region. Many stations are being upgraded, and new train services are being planned or rolled out under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) and other initiatives.
To name a few, NFR has planned several major projects such as new lines and the refurbishment of workshops in the most influential areas (like a planned Wagon POH workshop at Basbari in Kokrajhar, and a cross-border New Railway Line Project leading to Bhutan) which not only extends the network but also opens up the areas like BTAD (Bodoland Territorial Area Districts) for economic growth and the region beyond Kamakhya.
The Kamakhya upgrade, therefore, is interwoven with a comprehensive scheme of infrastructures modernization and the diffusion of premium train services in Assam and the Northeast.
