Language Day 2024: The annual observance of International Mother Language Day occurs on February 21. UNESCO coordinated the inaugural observance as a Commemoration of Linguistic and Cultural Variation. The global language count exceeds 7,000, which is a substantial figure when one considers that certain languages have more extensive documentation and are more widely spoken than others.

With few exceptions, several ethnic languages, of which only minority speakers continue to speak at present, are projected to become extinct within the next few decades. International Mother Language Day is crucial for this reason, as it is a component of a larger effort to reestablish the linguistic heritage of numerous communities.

The History of Language Day

In 1999, UNESCO instituted the International Mother Language for the first time. In 2000, the inaugural celebration commenced. The genesis of this yearly observance can be traced back to its intention of honoring the Bengali Language Movement, an endeavor to establish Bengali as the sanctioned tongue of contemporary Bangladesh. Throughout history, this area was classified as East Pakistan and was home to substantial Bengali communities characterized by their unique language and culture. The Bengali language’s predicament exemplifies numerous analogous challenges encountered by humble linguistic communities globally.

The Bengali movement’s challenges can plausibly be attributed to the inception of Pakistan in 1947. The Bengali Language Movement emerged from the Bengali communities of East Pakistan during the early 1950s and rose to prominence at that time. In pursuit of official language recognition, the movement organized and participated in public gatherings and rallies. In 1952, police opened fire on the mass procession march of the Bengali Language Movement. There were numerous fatalities and hundreds of injuries. The day of this incident was designated as a national holiday in Bengal.

The United Nations subsequently proclaimed February 21 International Mother Language Day in remembrance of this narrative. The objective of the U.N. initiative is to prevent the extinction of the world’s languages. Each international observance has had a theme since the year 2000. An annual endeavor is to incorporate novel components into educational initiatives aimed at safeguarding indigenous languages and advancing language acquisition. Consequently, the commemoration of the Bengali Language Movement evolved into a global occurrence that pays homage to languages across the globe.
