Late Summer Bank Holiday 2023

Late Summer Bank Holiday 2023: Every last Monday of August in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (and every first Monday of August in Scotland) is the Late Summer Bank Holiday. This year’s event occurs on August 28. The holiday was devised to provide workers with a break before the end of summer and the lengthy stretch of work between then and Christmas without a holiday. In 1971, this holiday was shifted from the first Monday of August to the last Monday. In Scotland, however, the original date has been preserved. On this day, many people will visit local beaches, parks, and tourist destinations in the United Kingdom.

Late Summer Bank Holiday 2023: HISTORY

The Bank Holidays Act of 1871 established five national holidays in Scotland: Easter Monday, the first Monday in August, Christmas Day, Whit Monday, and New Year’s Day. Unlike the Spring bank holidays, the August bank holiday has no religious significance.

Nonetheless, Sir John Lubbock’s 1871 celebration occurred during a crucial cricket match. The holiday was selected so that employees would have one last opportunity to enjoy summer before the protracted period of no vacations leading up to Christmas.

In 1964, Edward Heath, then-Secretary of State for Industry, proposed an interim change to the August Bank Holiday in England and Wales. Since the early August holiday virtually always interfered with the annual two-week summer shutdown of large industries, which began in the last week of July, the move from the beginning to the end of August had been suggested for many years.

England, Wales, and Northern Ireland had permanently adopted the last Monday in August by August 1971, while Scotland remained on the previous schedule. The Notting Hill Carnival, which began in 1966 as a commemoration of London’s Caribbean community, their culture, and traditions, is among the most well-known August Bank Holiday events.
