It is the ideal day to don your favourite bow tie and parade it around town to demonstrate your elegant and refined demeanour. Even if you wear it with jeans, such a statement accessory will make you appear impeccable. Today, we celebrate these timeless fashion accessories and all the people who wear them routinely.
National Bow Tie Day 2023: HISTORY
Since the dawn of time, or at least since the nineteenth century, the bow tie has been a symbol of social and intellectual affluence. Whether you were of high social standing by inheritance or renowned in intellectual circles, the bow tie communicated this to the world.
Well, perhaps not quite that extreme. Since its humble beginnings, however, the bow tie has become a status symbol in many social circles. Interestingly, Croatian mercenaries wore the first bow ties during the Thirty Years’ War in the 17th century. The soldiers required neckties resembling scarf loops. Taking a cue from this relatively obscure and provocative source, the French popularised the trend in Paris before it spread to the rest of the fashion-conscious world.
From that point forward, the bow tie would become an essential component of formal attire, particularly among medical and doctoral doctors. Eventually, the tie’s popularity would wane (pun intended) during World War II due to a lack of materials and people to create and wear them. However, it is no secret that the bow tie has survived among ballet-goers and James Bond antagonists. Today, bow ties are worn to both black-tie events and, paradoxically, by hipsters. National Bow Tie Day is thus a celebration of all the history and symbolism crammed into a single, flawless knot.
