Legendary playback singer SP Balasubrahmanyam passes away at MGM healthcare in Chennai, his son and producer S P Charan confirms.

After showing signs of recovery over the last few weeks, SPB’s health deteriorated. A medical bulletin from the hospital confirmed that he has passed away.

In his long and successful career, SP Balasubrahmanyam had worked in the in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Hindi and Malayalam film industries. He had recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages. He also had a Guinness World Record in his name for recording the highest number of songs by a singer.

SP Balasubrahmanyam was honoured with six National Film Awards in the Best Male Playback Singer category. The singer was also presented with 25 Andhra Pradesh state Nandi Awards and many other state awards from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In 2012, he had also received the state NTR National Award for his contributions towards the Indian cinema.

Over the last few weeks, several members of the Tamil film fraternity came together to pray for the speedy recovery of the legendary singer. A mass prayer was organised in which several Tamil celebrities prayed for SPB’s recovery while playing one of his songs.

SP Balasubrahmanyam is survived by his wife Savitri Balasubrahmanyam, his son S. P. Charan and daughter Pallavi Balasubrahmanyam. S. P. Charan is also a playback singer and film producer.
