M. Karunanidhi Biography

Early Years

Karunanidhi was born on June 3, 1924, in the village of Thirukkuvalai, to Thiru Muthuvelar and Thirumathi Anjugam Ammaiyar. Both of his parents come from extremely humble beginnings. His mother came from an impoverished background and was a temple performer in her youth. Dakshinamurthy was Karunanidhi’s original name before he altered it to Muthuvel Karunanidhi. His childhood and early education are largely unknown, but it was well-known that he had a keen interest in Tamil literature.

M. Karunanidhi Career

Karunanidhi began his career as a screenwriter in the Tamil film industry, fueled by his passion for Tamil literature. Through his film screenplays, he attempted to convey a significant social message; his storylines included widow remarriage, the abolition of the zamindari system, the elimination of religious duplicity, the eradication of untouchability, and self-respect marriages. The film “Parasakthi” reflects his opposition to the negative aspects of Brahmanism held by traditional Hindu communities. Despite numerous controversies, the film was widely publicised and accepted by audiences throughout the state. His unconventional subject matter made him one of the most in-demand screenwriters of his time. Karunanidhi composed numerous poems, letters, books, biographies, historical novels, songs, dialogues, plays, essays, short tales, etc., in addition to dialogues for motion pictures. The renowned “Valluvar Kottam” architectural rock accumulation is said to be Karunanidhi’s tribute to the renowned scholar Thiruvalluvar as an art enthusiast.

Karunanidhi was influenced by Alagiriswamii, a member of the Justice Party that once ruled India during the British occupation. Supposedly, after hearing Alagiriswamii’s speech, Karunanidhi was inspired to support social causes.

Consequently, he became a prominent adolescent figure. In 1957, he was first elected from the Thiruchirapalli district to the state assembly. As soon as he joined the DMK party in 1961, he was appointed treasurer and then opposition leader the following year. In 1967, when the party assumed power, Karunanidhi held a position of authority. Annadurai was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu in 1967 but was unable to continue due to his untimely death. Two years later, M. Karunanidhi succeeded Annadurai as Chief Minister, and he has since been re-elected in 1971, 1989, 1996, and 2006. M.Karunanidhi, who is 87 years old, remains an integral element of not only the DMK party but also Tamil Nadu politics.
