In a horrendous incident reported from Madhya Pradesh, a seven-year-old girl was raped and her eyes stabbed in a barbaric attack in MP’s Damoh on Wednesday night, prompting statewide outrage and condemnation. Police nabbed a suspect on Thursday evening.

Amid the lockdown, this is the third rape case in the state. As per the reports, the child was found in a jungle, bleeding from the eyes, and with her hands and legs tied. She was taken to Jabalpur on Thursday, where doctors operated on her to try and save her vision.

CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan ordered police to arrest the rapist immediately and tweeted: “The monster behind this appalling crime will be given the harshest punishment. The child will get the best medical care.” Under Chouhan, Madhya Pradesh was the first state to enact a law to hang those who rape children aged 12 and below.

They were horrified to find the child trussed up and bleeding from the eyes, say police. It’s believed the rapist left her for dead. She was first taken to a local hospital and then taken to Jabalpur Medical College, 70 kilometres away, where she was wheeled into surgery. The doctors confirmed rape.

For the uninitiated, the maximum punishment for rape of children in MP is death.
