In an unfortunate incident, eight engineering students, including two girls from Belgaum in Karnataka drowned in the sea off Malvan, Sindhudurg, in Maharashtra on Saturday afternoon.

Another three were rescued by the locals and one of them is in serious condition and undergoing treatment at hospital.

Reportedly, the victims were a part of a large group, which came for a picnic. They were from a private engineering college and arrived early on Saturday in a private bus from Belgaum.

They had gone to the scenic Wayri Beach.

The students allegedly were ignoring warnings from the locals of strong currents. They soon were washed away into deep water.

While locals managed to rescue three of them, they later retrieved the bodies of the other eight. Soon after the incident, the police and district officials arrived at the spot of the tragedy.
