Managing Your High Emotions

Managing Your High Emotions: You may not know what to do when you are emotionally high. Emotions can be difficult to deal with in many situations. Most people don’t think about what to do when they feel more intense than usual. For example, you may feel upset with someone on a regular basis, but you may have observed your anger spiralling out of control. When that happens, you may do or say things you don’t truly mean. Almost everyone faces this issue at some point. If you’re wondering what to do when you’re emotionally high, keep reading.

Name your emotions

The best way to avoid doing anything you don’t want to do is by identifying your current feelings before acting on them. Take a moment to reflect and ask yourself some questions if you notice yourself becoming more emotional than usual.

* What am I feeling? – Name your emotion, such as anger, fear, or disappointment.
* What is causing this reaction in me? – Determine why you are having this feeling.
* Is it vital to take action right now? – Consider whether the individual who made you feel this way had a purpose for doing so.
* What actions do I wish to take in response to this feeling? – You may want to yell at someone or toss things on your desk to get your frustrations out.
How can you cope with this emotion without causing harm to others? – You can go outside for some fresh air, ask if the person who made you feel this way is okay, etc.

You have control over how you react to your emotions this way, and you’re dealing with them rather than ignoring them.

Feelings must be accepted

Every person needs to acknowledge and accept their feelings rather than suppress them. For example, you might feel as though you are about to cry after someone said something to you. By saying things like “What they said isn’t a big deal” or “You’re overreacting, so don’t make a big deal out of it”, you can distract yourself when you don’t want to cry.

If you don’t tell yourself those things, maybe someone else will. Regardless, that’s not a healthy way to deal with your emotions. It arises as a result of a certain experience, and by saying those things, you or others are rejecting your experience. This reaction or emotion was significant enough for you to have that reaction. It must always be acknowledged and accepted. By doing the things listed above, or by figuring out how to deal with them later, you will be able to figure out how to handle them.

Cope in a healthy way

Your emotions can be dealt with in a number of ways, including through a healthy coping strategy, which can help you deal with them more positively. For example, some people enjoy working out when they are feeling down. Others prefer simply going for a stroll or run to enjoy some fresh air. Many people like to take a bath to ensure that they are coping with their emotions in a more relaxing manner. To improve their mood, some people also enjoy listening to music, cooking or eating their favorite meals.

Plus, you get to enjoy a hobby that makes you and your body feel good without having to put in a lot of effort.

Furthermore, be aware that being emotionally sensitive is not a bad thing. It is very normal to become emotional over minor events, such as watching your child go to school or being angry about something unfair in society. You are not a bad person if you keep these feelings hidden from others.

A therapist can help you deal with them properly. And this is not something to be ashamed of.
