Manipur BJP MLA Joykishan Khumukcham  on Wednesday joined the ruling Congress party to protest against the failure of the Modi government to the solve the crisis facing Manipur in the wake of the continuing road blockades.

“I put my state’s interest above party’s. Manipur has been suffering since November 1 due to the economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council (UNC).” Joykishan said.

“I was in contact with the national leaders [of the party] for the last five days on the sufferings of the people. However, there was no response from them,” he added.

Joykishan is a national executive member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He added that people of his constituency announced that if the central government does not announce the details of Naga Framework Agreement by December 23, then BJP will be driven off from the constituency.

Manipur has been facing serious protests since November 1 following the state government’s announcement of the formation of seven new districts.

The indefinite economic blockade on the national highways by the United Naga Council had resulted in a shortage of essential items in the land-locked state.

With Joykishan’s resignation, BJP has only one member in the State Assembly, ruled by Congress.
