Marhaura Assembly Constituency 2025:Marhaura is an assembly constituency (No. 117) in Saran district, Bihar. Under the delimitation of 2008, it consists of the Marhaura and Nagra community development blocks. It is part of the Saran Lok Sabha constituency.
Voters, and Local Issues
In terms of voters:
In the 2020 election, Marhaura had about 2,57,878 electors, split roughly as 1,37,517 male and 1,20,361 female voters.
The voter turnout in 2020 was approximately 58.8%.
Local issues tend to revolve around infrastructure, employment, industrial decline, public services, and caste/community alignments. For example, Marhaura was once an industrial town known for the Morton Chocolate Factory (toffees, chocolates etc.) and some sugar mills. The decline or underperformance of such units is often part of local discontent. Other recurring problems include road connectivity, electricity, health facilities, water supply, agricultural distress etc. (common to many Saran-region rural-urban mix areas).
Caste dynamics are relevant: given the electorate composition, candidate profile (background, caste) usually plays a role. Also, party loyalty and past performance are important in this constituency.
Marhaura Assembly Constituency 2025: Recent Political History
Marhaura has been a relatively strong seat for Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in recent elections. Jitendra Kumar Rai of RJD has won in 2010, 2015, and 2020. In 2010, he first defeated his opponent, marking the shift from earlier years when other parties or independents sometimes held sway. Before 2010, the constituency saw more mixed results: Independents, Congress, Janata Dal etc.
Margins and vote shares have fluctuated. In 2020, Jitendra Kumar Rai (RJD) won with ~39.8% vote share vs JD(U) rival Altaf Alam with ~32.3%. The competition has been fairly close when the runner-ups are strong. The presence of independent candidates also eats into vote shares.
Because of these patterns, analysts treat Marhaura as a “relatively secure but contestable” seat for RJD i.e., while RJD has been winning, shifts in alliances, strong challengers, or local dissatisfaction could make a difference.
Election Numbers (2010–2020)
Between 2010 and 2020, Marhaura has seen the following trends:
2010: Jitendra Kumar Rai (RJD) won, establishing himself. Vote counts lower, but he secured the seat.
2015: Turnout increased; Jitendra Kumar Rai again won with a stronger margin over BJP’s Lal Babu Ray. Vote share for RJD increased significantly.
2020: Jitendra Kumar Rai wins again, but competition from JD(U) is close. The margin was ~11,385 votes. Turnout remains moderate (~58-60%). Vote share for RJD slightly less than in 2015, but still enough.
So over these elections: RJD’s hold strengthened, but not overwhelmingly, there remains room for competition. Also, the role of smaller parties or independents sometimes influences outcome via vote splitting.
