A wagon of goods train, numbered 107462, which had started its trek in November 2014 from Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh reached its destination in Uttar Pradesh after three years, highlighting the careless attitude of Indian Railways.

Wagon was booked in November 2014 by a company called Indian Potash Limited to send a parcel containing compost to a shop in UP’s Basti district, 1,400 kilometres away. The wagon arrived at its destination after three-and-a-half years when the compost worth Rs 10 lakh had decayed.

The case of missing wagon came under light after the owner of the product wrote to the railways saying that the parcel did not reach its destination. However, the public transporter could not track the wagon, which passed unnoticed through several stations year after year.

Owner Ramchandra Gupta, displeased with the ignorance of Indian Railways, has denied to accept the parcel now as the compost in the wagon has decyed. Ramchandra said, “This wagon was missing for the past three-and-a-half years and even after several reminders, the railways could not track it. The compost worth Rs 10 lakh in the parcel has decayed.”

Owner has demanded to recover the cost of goods from railways on an assessment basis.

However, Chief public relation officer (North Eastern Railway) Sanjay Yadav said that no consignee has been identified as yet and the process to identify the consignee is underway.
