Moldova Independence Day 2023: HISTORY
The Republic of Moldova is located in Eastern Europe and was originally a part of the Soviet Union. Bordering countries include Romania and Ukraine. From the 14th century until 1812, when it surrendered to the Russian Empire, a large portion of modern-day Moldova was part of the principality of Moldavia and was thereafter renamed “Bessarabia.”
In 1856, Russian sovereignty was reinstated over the entire territory, including Southern Bessarabia, which had been ceded to Moldavia and joined with Wallachia to establish Romania in 1859. Bessarabia, at the time known as the Moldavian Democratic Republic, was an independent state inside the Russian Republic during the Russian Revolution of 1917. After declaring independence in February 1918, the Moldavian Democratic Republic voted to join Romania later that year.
In 1940, the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic was established when Romania was compelled by the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact to cede Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina to the Soviet Union. As the Soviet Union was breaking apart, the Moldavian SSR declared independence on August 27, 1991, and changed its name to Moldova.
The act creating the Commonwealth of Independent States (C.I.S.) was signed by Moldova and ten other Soviet republics on December 21, 1991. On March 2, 1992, Moldova was admitted as a member state to the United Nations, marking the formal recognition of the country’s independence.
After years of celebrating the October Revolution and Victory Day with parades in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, independence was finally celebrated with a military parade in 2001.
