NAIL DAY HISTORY
Nail care is old. 3000 B.C. Ming Dynasty documents describe nail polish use. 5,000 years ago, Babylonians had manicures. They utilised gold tools. Nobility dominated it. In many cultures, nail colours indicated status. Egyptian elites painted their nails red to show their position. Military officers painted their nails. Henna colours decorated Indian nails before nail polish. Henna’s brownish-red pigment lasts several days.
China invented nail polish. 3000 B.C. beeswax, egg whites, gelatine, and flower petal colours were employed. China loved nail lacquer with roses and orchids. These ornaments showed affluence and position. Old-world aristocrats had red nails.
In 1920s France, makeup artist Michelle Menard invented glossy nail paint. In 1932, Revlon introduced contemporary nail polish and manicures to the public. Accidentally found false nails. Dentist Fred Slack invented the first realistic artificial nail in 1954. He improved and patented the invention. That started a manicure revolution that continues to redefine styles.
