National AFL-CIO Day 2023 History, FAQs, Dates, Activities, and Facts About workers

National AFL-CIO Day 2023: December 5 marks National AFL-CIO Day, which commemorates the founding of the organization. Vigilantly striving to ensure that every employee is regarded with respect, they provide adequate compensation and benefits, secure employment, dignity, and equal opportunities. Their primary objective is to guarantee that all individuals who are employed are capable of providing for their families and retiring with honor.

They advocate for policies that allocate tax dollars towards infrastructure development (e.g., roadways, bridges, ports, and airports) and enhance the well-being of employees through vocational training, education, and a fair minimum wage. Among their demands are stronger social security, equitable tax policies, and affordable, high-quality healthcare.

The History of National AFL-CIO Day

AFL-CIO has actively participated in various civil rights movements throughout its history. CIO’s willingness to hire African American employees emerged as a significant point of contention between the AFL and the CIO. Blacks would later accuse the CIO of abandoning their interests, particularly in the wake of the A.F.L. merger.

In 1961, at the organization’s conference in Bal Harbour, Florida, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech entitled “If the Negro Wins, Labor Wins.” King envisioned a collaboration between labor and civil rights that would bring about significant improvements for the entire working class through the eradication of racial discrimination. King, on the other hand, censured the A.F.L.-CIO for permitting unions to exclude African American workers.

A.F.L.-CIO initiated a contentious internal debate in 2003 regarding the trajectory of the labor movement in the United States following the establishment of the New Unity Partnership (N.U.P.), an ad hoc coalition comprising several prominent CIO unions. This matter became increasingly contentious in 2004, subsequent to the labor-backed candidate John Kerry’s defeat in the United States presidential election of November 2004.

In August 2013, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (I.L.W.U.) withdrew from the A.F.L.-CIO. Individuals affiliated with other AFL-CIO unions crossed its picket lines without the union’s intervention, according to the I.L.W.U. Also observed: the AFL’s willingness to allow CIOs to reach compromises on important issues. It was declared that the Dockers’ Union would form an independent union.
