HISTORY OF NATIONAL BEAUTICIAN’S DAY

The purpose of National Beautician’s Day is to recognise the cosmetic industry. Since antiquity, beauticians have existed. Numerous kingdoms had maids with specialised training in enhancing the attractiveness of the royal families they served. These beauticians would also create unique cosmetics, soaps, and shampoos using natural ingredients such as brightly coloured fruits and botanicals. Each nation had its own methods for aesthetic enhancement. In South Asia, for instance, coconut oil was used to achieve lustrous and healthy hair. A paste comprised of turmeric, lemon, sugar, and honey was also used to generate a radiant glow not only on the face, but the entire body. In the Middle East, beauticians incinerated a fragrant substance known as oud, and then used the resulting smoke to scent their clients’ hair.

As globalisation and commercialization increased over the decades, so did the cosmetics industry. There are now courses ranging from diplomas to bachelor’s degrees to master’s degrees that assist individuals enter the industry. Cosmetology is one of these branches of aesthetics. It focuses on teaching and certifying individuals in the fields of nails, cosmetics, manicures/pedicures, hair, and electrology. World Wars I and II were notably transformative for the cosmetology industry. As males were enlisted in the military, many women were compelled to enter the workforce. This resulted in women forsaking their appearance in favour of other concerns. As more and more women sought the assistance of beauticians to beautify and indulge themselves, salon visits increased. Both then and now, beauticians alleviated their clients’ concerns that were unrelated to their appearance. Because of the time spent together, beauticians and their patrons develop friendships.
