National Petroleum Day 2023: HISTORY

Petroleum, often known as crude oil or oil, is a naturally occurring, yellowish-black liquid that seeps out of rock over time. It’s commonly refined into a wide range of chemicals and fuels. Petroleum has been used in a variety of applications since prehistoric times. Herodotus, a prominent Greek historian, claims that petroleum was utilised in the building of Babylon’s walls. In addition to using petroleum in medicine, the ancient Persians utilised it to fuel their lamps for illumination. In the middle 1800s, Scottish chemist James Young began distilling petroleum, producing kerosene and a thicker, darker oil that was perfect for lubricating equipment.

The use of petroleum dates back more than two thousand years in China. According to the “I Ching,” one of the earliest Chinese classics, oil was first discovered, produced, and used in China in the 1st century B.C. In addition, the first known usage of petroleum as a fuel dates back to the 4th century B.C. in China. By 347 A.D., China began extracting oil from wells drilled with bamboo.

Oil sands have been mined for since the 18th century. By 1848, Young had set up a small business refining the crude oil he had discovered seeping out of the ground at the Riddings colliery in Alfreton. After much effort, Young was able to successfully extract many valuable liquids from it, one of which he named “paraffine oil.” In 1851, Young entered into a collaboration that would create the first commercial oil refinery and the first modern oil refinery in the world.
