National Earl Day is annually observed on June 9. It is an unusual celebration. Earl is a relatively uncommon name these days, so this holiday can inspire more people to recognise the name’s beauty and continue on its legacy.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL EARL DAY
Roger Slack created National Earl Day in 2016 in honour of Earl Baltes. It was authorised for the 2016 opening day of the Dirt Late Model Dream at the 1954 Baltes-founded Eldora Speedway. Roger Slack created the day so that it would coincide with the inaugural day of this prestigious dirt racing event.
Earl Baltes was a bandleader who converted the Eldora Ballroom into the Eldora Speedway to become a dirt racecourse owner. Later, he increased the track’s size and began promoting additional courses and events. He promoted the most lucrative short-track races in Ohio and Indiana.
In 2016, Eldora Speedway events continued to be popular. Eldora Speedway hosts annual events such as the World 100 and the King’s Royal, which is part of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
The purpose of National Earl Day is to honour all Earls and their greatest accomplishments.
