National Eat Outside Day 2023: Picnics, grill parties, cookouts, and beer gardens. In honour of National Eat Outside Day, take some time to enjoy a supper in the open air.

National Eat Outside Day’s History

Humans have likely been dining outdoors since the beginning of time and history. Even after people began constructing indoor dwellings, outdoor dining continued to have a place. During the Middle Ages, people would prepare food and bring it with them on hunting expeditions for practical reasons.

During the 17th century, beer gardens were established in what is now Bavaria, Germany. During the 18th century, when settlers would host gatherings in their private “pleasure gardens,” picnics probably became popular in the United States. Eventually, the concept would evolve into something that average citizens would appreciate in a local park, forest, or natural space.

Some researchers believe that Coney Island, New York may have been the origin of outdoor dining in the United States. The first roller coaster was added to the amusement park in 1884, and people enjoyed spending time outdoors, so restaurateur Charles Feltman created a sandwich for people to eat on the go. Thus, the hot dog became one of the easiest and most popular foods to consume outside.

And National Eat Outside Day has arrived to commemorate all the excitement!

How to Observe Eat Outside Day

National Eat Outside Day can be celebrated in a variety of methods involving outdoor dining. Start with some of these suggestions:

Take a Picnic

National Eat Outside Day can be celebrated by inviting friends and family, packing a picnic, and heading to a park, ocean, or other enjoyable location. Fill a picnic basket with an assortment of delectable outdoor-friendly foods, including fried chicken, deli sandwiches, cut fruit such as watermelon or apples, potato salad, sliced vegetables with hummus dip, and homemade biscuits or pie for dessert. And don’t neglect to bring a picnic blanket!

Patio dining at a restaurant

Since National Eat Outside Day occurs in the summer, it is a wonderful time to dine outside at a favourite restaurant. During the milder months, many restaurants, whether they serve barbecue sandwiches or Italian cuisine, offer outdoor seating. Make a reservation in advance, just in case others have the same idea in honour of the holiday!

Host a Barbecue Party

Inviting a few friends or neighbours over for a barbecue is one of the most popular ways that people like to celebrate National Eat Outside Day. Fire up the grill and layer it with an assortment of outdoor-inspired dishes, including hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwurst, sausages, chicken breasts, shrimp and more.
