National Good Neighbor Day 2023 History, Dates, Activities, and FAQs

National Good Neighbor Day 2023: September 28 is National Good Neighbor Day. On this day, we bond with our adjacent families through enjoyable activities. It’s a great method to break the ice and develop lasting relationships.

The Background of National Good Neighbor Day

Neighbors can make or break your experience of living in an area, as neighborliness determines how delightful and comfortable our neighborhood is. Being a decent neighbor enables us to form strong and enduring relationships. In times of crisis, neighbors are like umbrellas on a rainy day, lending an assisting hand.

Previous generations had a propensity to involve their companions in numerous activities. They invited them to parties and balls, took them horseback riding, worked on their farms, invited them to dinner, and looked after their homes when they were abroad. Due to our busy schedules and technological advancements, we rarely care about or exhibit interest in the neighboring family. This is why people can reside next to one another for years without becoming acquainted.

National Good Neighbor Day was first observed in the early 1970s by a Montana woman named Becky Mattson who desired to communicate with her neighbors. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation establishing the day as an official holiday. The Senate passed a resolution recognizing that there was a lack of meaningful communication between individuals and the need to bring them together so that they could interact. The Senate believed that human values and consideration for others were essential to the system of civilization, and determined that being a decent neighbor was the first step toward achieving human understanding. Thus, a fixed date for Good Neighbor Day was established. Now, on September 28, we observe National Good Neighbor Day, devoting extra time to caring for our neighbors and forming or maintaining friendships.
