NATIONAL CRUSH A CAN DAY 2023: National Crush a Can Day, also known as National Crush Day, occurs annually on September 27. It is a day devoted to educating our nation and the globe on the significance of recycling. This day is the ideal occasion to remind people that recycling conserves life and natural resources by reducing waste, lowering carbon emissions, and saving money. Let’s band together and save the universe!
The Background of National Crush-A-Can Day
Napoleon offered a prize of 12,000 francs to anyone who could devise a method to preserve perishable food for army and navy use in 1795. The ancients preserved their food using methods such as salting and dehydrating centuries ago. Nicolas Appert, a French confectioner and brewer, developed a method for preserving food in airtight bottles and glass vessels in 1809. Peter Durand, a British inventor and merchant, patented his own method of using tin-coated iron cans in 1810, and by 1813 he was supplying the Royal Navy with vast quantities of canned food.
While Appert’s invention established the foundation for food preservation, Durand is credited with developing the modern food canning process. Thomas Kensett and Ezra Daggett patented the use of tin plates in 1825 and began selling tinned meats, fruits, and vegetables in the United States. In the 1860s, can-making became mechanized, but the first tinned soft drink, Clicquot Club ginger ale, did not hit the market until 1938. By 1967, Coca-Cola and Pepsi had popularized the use of lighter, rust-resistant, and recyclable aluminum beverage cans, which Reynolds Metals Company had produced in 1963 to package a diet cola called ‘Slenderella.’
The first aluminum can recycling facilities were established in Chicago in 1904, despite the fact that recycling was initially not widespread. In 1970, the same year as the first Earth Day, recycling steel and aluminum cans grew in popularity and acceptance, particularly with the proliferation of nationwide buy-back centers that exchanged returned cans for money.
Producing an aluminum can from recycled cans requires 95% less energy and 90% fewer emissions than producing the same can from unprocessed materials. Remember to always recycle your cans to keep our planet pure!
