National Library Workers Day 2023: National Library Workers Day is observed on April 25 this year, the Tuesday of National Library Week. The day recognises the significance and contributions of the library staff who keep our libraries operating while we lose ourselves in the amazing books. The library is more than just a place to obtain books; it reflects the needs and expectations of the community. And library employees fulfil these requirements and expectations by facilitating access to information, books, and other resources. Libraries function because they function!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL LIBRARY WORKERS DAY
National Library Workers Day was conceived by the American Library Association and first observed in 2004. The purpose of the day was to garner support for improved benefits and wages for library employees, which had remained stagnant for years.
As early as 2600 B.C., there were already libraries. The earliest libraries consisted of archives of the earliest forms of writing discovered on clay tablets in Sumerian temple chambers. Since then, libraries have developed from antiquity to late antiquity and have influenced societies, from the ancient Greek and Roman empires to the modern era.
While libraries have existed for centuries, access to literature has not always been so straightforward. In 1833, the first public library opened in the United States. Prior to that, libraries were privately owned.
Public libraries are currently an integral element of the community. They offer publications from all over the world on virtually every imaginable subject. Librarians are responsible for maintaining this historical catalogue. They are research maestros who cultivate creativity and knowledge. Due to global economic fluctuations, however, their salaries have decreased to such a low level that it is now difficult for these professions to continue.
