National Mofongo Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Events

National Mofongo Day is observed annually on September 24 as part of Hispanic Heritage Month. Mofongo is the national cuisine of Puerto Rico and is composed of Spanish ingredients such as pork, garlic, olive oil, broth, and, of course, plantain.

The delicacy is made by mashing plantain in a wooden mortar with a pestle, then adding seasonings and liquid ingredients such as oil and pork fat to soften the mixture. Mofongo is served in Puerto Rico for lunch or dinner, or as a side dish with vegetables, poultry, shrimp, beef, or even octopus.

The background of National Mofongo Day

Mofongo can be traced back to the West and Central African dish fufu. ‘Fufu’ or ‘foofoo’ is a dough-like food prepared by mashing tubers such as yam, cassava, and plantain. Similar to mofongo, it is prepared with a mortar and pestle and served with meat, poultry, fish, or vegetable stew-based sauces.

Angolan slaves introduced the cuisine to Puerto Rico in the 1500s. The word mofongo originates from the Angolan Kikongo phrase mfwenge-mfwenge, which means “a large quantity of anything.” The primary distinction between African fufu and Puerto Rican mofongo is that mofongo is typically more dense and thicker than fufu, and it is typically served as a main dish, whereas fufu is typically served as a side dish alongside a stew or broth. There are additional differences between the two, such as preparation. When preparing fufu, the cook will use plantain or cassava that has been boiled, whereas when preparing mofongo, the plantain is sautéed before being mashed and combined with other ingredients such as olive oil and garlic.

On the island, mofongo has been served for nearly 150 years. It is one dish that combines African and Caribbean flavors uniquely and seamlessly. It is so flavorful, with varied textures and vibrant hues. Chef Jose Mendin believed that the dish merited a holiday for these and many other reasons. He chose September 24 because it fell during Hispanic Heritage Month, and he anticipated the day would be a source of pride for the Puerto Rican people.
