National Pumpkin Day 2023: October 26 is when National Pumpkin Day is observed. Pumpkins transcend their mere amusement value as a holiday accessory. In addition to being a widely recognized source of beta-carotene (a bodily-metabolized antioxidant that is converted to vitamin A), pumpkins are also an excellent source of potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. On National Pumpkin Day, indulge in some (and, of course, have some joy carving them).

The History of National Pumpkin Day

Pumpkins comprise the gourd family, which also includes zucchini, cucumbers, honeydew melons, cantaloupe, and watermelons. Unbeknownst to the majority, they are fruits and not vegetables. Native to Mexico and Central America, these plants have since established themselves on six continents. Their North American history dates back 5,000 years.

Pumpkins are a Western Hemisphere indigenous plant. During his exploration of the St. Lawrence region of North America in the 1500s, Frenchman Jacques Cartier reportedly discovered “gros melons.” The English translation of the appellation, originally “pompions,” has evolved into the current form “pumpkin.”

Pumpkins serve both a culinary and recreational purpose, particularly in the months of October and November. Thanksgiving has adopted pumpkin pie as a traditional dish in both the United States and Canada. During the Halloween season, we also carve jack-o’-lanterns, although the pumpkins we consume and the ones we carve are typically derived from two distinct varieties of winter squash. (A gourd is typically not regarded as a consumable squash.) Bear in mind: gourds have amusing features. Squash ultimately ends up on the table for supper.

Since the 1800s, a Halloween connection has existed. In contrast to the year 1866, when the concept of a carved pumpkin explicitly originated, the term “jack-o’-lantern” was introduced in 1837.

Early July is typically when farmers plant pumpkins. Fruit requires soil with excellent water retention. Water scarcity and unusually low temperatures are harmful to plants. However, pumpkins are quite resilient and, if necessary, can regenerate damaged vines.

Pumpkin seeds, too, are a popular nibble food. Frequently, supermarkets carry both hulled and semi-hulled varieties. Additionally, they are rich in zinc, magnesium, copper, and protein.
