When the internet did not exist, many people delighted in recording television programmes for later viewing. In 1984, the Supreme Court ruled that home recording of television programmes is not a violation of copyright law. Previously, the act of recording shows had prompted some copyright-related concerns. This decision enabled millions of Americans to create their own collections of films and television shows. National VCR Day is observed annually to recognise the influence VCRs have had on the globe.
