New Bill Proposes Monthly Direct Payments in 2024: Michigan Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib is leading an effort to address the housing needs of young people and emancipated minors under 30 by proposing three years of cash assistance to help end homelessness.

Jan Schakowsky, Democratic Representatives Cori Bush, Sylvia Garcia, Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Barbara Lee support the bill, which seeks $1,400 in rental assistance or market rates.

The initiative helps millennials and Generation Z while assessing its impact on homelessness prevention. Tlaib’s office confirmed the program’s nationwide reach but questioned the legislative agenda.

“We can’t keep repeating the same policy approaches that haven’t ended the youth homelessness crisis,” Tlaib said.

“By offering direct monetary aid, we can effectively tackle the housing crisis while upholding the dignity and independence of the individuals receiving such support.”

“Young people with direct experience started this bill. They helped develop the measure to ensure it meets the needs of homeless Americans.

“Homelessness must end in the wealthiest nation ever. The Youth Homelessness Guaranteed Income Pilot Program Act helps us.

A statement expressed support for the Youth Homelessness Guaranteed Income Pilot Program Act as a positive initial move to tackle homelessness and its disproportionate impact on unhoused residents by the criminal system.

“Instead of implementing policies that tackle the convergence of extreme housing costs in the United States and known root causes, our existing system continues to deploy correctional facilities and jails.” This law represents a long-overdue shift from the flawed carceral paradigm to a more egalitarian urban environment.

Many nonprofits, including the Detroit Justice Center, support the proposal as a progressive homelessness solution.
