Election Commissioner Achal Kumar Jyoti has been elected as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India. He will take charge as the CEC on July 6 after the current CEC Nasim Zaidi, who took charge on April 19, 2015 as the 20th CEC, will retire.

Jyoti, the former Chief Secretary of Gujarat, was designated as the Election Commissioner on May 7, 2015.

He filled one of the two posts in the three-member body.

Jyoti served in various capacities in Gujarat including the Chairman of the Kandla Port Trust between 1999 and 2004 and Managing Director of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL).

The 64-year-old retired from active service in January 2013. Jyoti is also a retired 1975-batch IAS Officer belonging to the Gujarat Cadre.
