Ganjam: A farmer named N Prakash Reddy was found dead in his farmland. Family of the deceased alleged that the farmer committed suicide owing to failing of the crop. Reddy belonged to Pattapur village.

In December 2018, the Odisha cabinet had approved the Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme with a budget of over Rs 10,000 crore for farmers. The scheme is said to provide cultivation, financial and livelihood support along with insurances to the farmers.

In November 2018, Odisha Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy said that in the state 227 farmers have committed suicide in the last five years due to various reasons but not because of loan burden.

Earlier, a Maharashtra farmer had allegedly jumped from the third floor of Ambedkar Bhavan committing suicide. The deceased had participated in the farmers’ protest that took place in Delhi.
