Padma Shri awardee Krishna Poonia noticed something upsetting on January 1 while she was waiting in her car at a railway crossing in Rajasthan’s Churu district. She soon realized that three hooligans on motorcycles are harassing two frightened teenage girls.

Moments after the 39-year-old Poonia who represented India in the Beijing and London Olympics stepped out of her car and confronted those men.

The mere look of a Poonia was sufficient as the frighten louts fled away the scene on their motorcycles after seeing her. However, Poonia was not the one to surrender so easily. She, in fact, chased the three men until she caught hold of one of them.

“When I saw those two girls being harassed, I thought that they could well have been my daughters. That made me go after the men,” she told the Hindustan Times.

Soon the occurrence caught the attention of several others. Poonia then called up the police and hand over the man to the officials who took quite a long time to arrive. The disappointed Poonia told the HT that she had to call up the police twice although the police station was just a couple of minutes away.

“How will the police ensure the safety of women if they take so long to act,” she said.  Poonia then took the two girls to the police station and helped them file a case.
