Order of National Artists Day 2023: On April 27, the Order of National Artists — or ‘Orden ng Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining’ celebrates the meritorious accomplishments of artists everywhere. This award is given to all Filipino citizens who have contributed substantially to the Philippine arts and culture scene. This is the highest honour bestowed upon individuals in the Philippines, and only the very finest are recommended for this distinction.
HISTORY OF ORDER OF NATIONAL ARTISTS
Since the pre-colonial era, Filipinos have been practising the art of painting. Each colonial period influenced the country’s art and culture. The Islamic period of the thirteenth century brought calligraphy, architecture, and painting, among other art forms. Arriving in the sixteenth century, the Spaniards introduced artistic paintings.
The resultant artwork is a stunning amalgamation of the Renaissance, Baroque, and even Modern periods.
The Philippine government acknowledged the richness of their art world and endeavoured to bestow official recognition on its artists and contributors. Thus, in 1972, the ‘Award and Decoration of National Artist’ was established to recognise all outstanding contributions to Philippine art disciplines, including dance, music, theatre, visual arts, literature, cinema and broadcast art, architecture, and design.
In 2003, the Philippine government issued a proclamation elevating the award to the status of ‘cultural order’. Now, this distinction ranks fourth among the Philippines’ most prestigious accolades. The ‘National Artist Award’ was renamed the ‘Order of National Artists’ to reflect the new level of distinction. As for how the artists who were to receive honours were chosen, it was a lengthy and laborious process that continues to this day.
The Order of National Artists Award Secretariat (O.N.A.A.) is comprised of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (N.C.C.A.) and the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (C.C.P. ), the two primary cultural bodies in command. They form a special research group to assure the impartiality of the entire procedure. A council of experts and a jury of experts comprised of critics, researchers, and academics examine the initial recommendations. The jury of experts then evaluates the finalists and makes recommendations to the O.N.A.A. The O.N.A.A. then presents the final list to the president of the Philippines, who confirms, proclaims, and confers the Order status on the chosen candidates.

Not an annual event
This occurrence only occurs once every three years.
What awardees get
National Artists receive a cash prize (claimed by legal successors in the event of a posthumous award), the title ‘Order of National Artist,’ a lifetime pension, and medical and hospital benefits.
Awardees also get gold
The Philippines’ central bank strikes a gold-plated medallion known as the ‘Grand Collar’ under the name ‘Grand Collar’.
The Order of National Artists is comparable in status to the United States National Medal for the Arts and Japan’s Order of Culture.
