Passover 2024: The Jewish faith celebrates Passover from 22-30 April every year, and this year it will last for eight days. The date for Passover is based on the Hebrew lunar calendar. It is always on the 15th day of Nissan, which is the first full moon after the spring equinox. Last year, Passover began at sundown on April 5 and ended at sundown on April 13.

What is the Passover celebration like?
In accordance with the Hebrew calendar and the Book of Exodus, Passover is observed “from the fourteenth of the month at evening until the twenty-first of the month at evening.”
Torah commands that during Passover, followers must not eat bread that has been leavened by yeast or any other agent.
The Seder is one of Passover’s most important celebrations. It is usually observed with family and friends and involves specific foods and stories. However, the types of foods served vary depending on where the celebration is held.

What is the traditional way of celebrating Passover?
Each night during Passover, Jews all over the world hold a Seder. A Seder commemorates many aspects of the Jews’ time in slavery and exodus.
The traditional Seder plate includes the following:
- During the Exodus from Egypt, the Hebrews had no time to let their bread rise, so they ate matzoh, a large, flat cracker.
- According to Chabad.org, lamb shanks represent the lamb sacrificed before the exodus from Egypt and annually in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem before Passover.
- In the days of the Holy Temple, hard-boiled eggs were brought as a pre-holiday offering.
- On the traditional Seder plate, horseradish is used as a symbol of the bitter tears that the Hebrews shed while they were enslaved.
- On the Seder plate, there is a paste-like mixture of apples, pears, nuts and wine that represents the mortar and brick the Hebrews used during slavery.
- The herb parsley is believed to represent the hard work the Hebrews had to endure under Pharaoh. Parsley is typically dipped in salt water and eaten. Saltwater represents the tears shed during slavery.
