Peace Corps Day 2024 (US): March 1 consistently marks the observance of Peace Corps Day. It commemorates the Peace Corps program’s volunteers. President John F. Kennedy instituted the program on March 1, 1961. Volunteers’ objective is to aid underdeveloped nations in their economic and social development through the application of technology, while simultaneously fostering international harmony and comprehension between the United States and the populations they serve.

Frequently, these volunteers possess teaching, cross-cultural, language, leadership, and community development competencies that confer upon them a competitive advantage in the current global economy, owing to their extensive experiences. Numerous organizations hire former Peace Corps volunteers.

Peace Corps Day History

The Peace Corps was established as a United States agency of volunteers on March 1, 1961, by President John F. Kennedy. Later, on September 22, 1961, the United States Congress approved the Peace Corps Act. First-time Peace Corps director Sargent Shriver was a brother-in-law of John F. Kennedy. Agriculture, Environment, Community Economic Development, Health, Education, and Youth in Development are the six project sectors comprising the program.

In 1950, United Auto Workers President Walter Reuther proposed that the United States establish a voluntary agency through which American youth could be dispatched to carry out humanitarian missions overseas. While Kennedy recognized the establishment of the Peace Corps, it was Senator Hubert H. Humphrey Jr. who initiated the initiative. He proposed the initial legislation to create the Peace Corps in 1957, three years before Kennedy’s inauguration.

Applicants for Peace Corps volunteer positions must be at least 18 years old, citizens of the United States, and submit their applications six to nine months before their intended departure date. Applicants will be interviewed. Applicants are granted the option to refine their application by specifying their preferred country of placement, although the application limit is one per year. Generally speaking, the six project sectors organize the placement process. They are required to serve in the foreign country for two years after being selected as volunteers; however, before that, they are required to have completed three months of training. The application process could take up to a year before 2014.
