While the Pi Day is marked every year on March 14 denoting the 3.14 calculation, the other approximate value is celebrated with Pi Approximation Day.

A pi is an irrational number and a mathematical constant. It is defined as the ratio between a circle’s circumference and its diameter.

As we mark Pi Approximation Day 2019, here’s looking at some lesser-known facts about the mathematical constant

  • There are two days related to Pi in a year. The first is Pi Day which is celebrated on March 14 and the other is observed on June 28. Also sometimes the entire month of March is observed as Pi month.
  • While Pi is related to mathematics but the celebration often involves celebrating with Pies. People often bake and eat sweet round pies.
  • In 1998, the first observation regarding Pi was made by Larry Shaw, a physicist at the Exploratorium who also revealed it was the day of Pi on March 14.
  • When 3.14 is seen in the mirror it reads similar to PIE.
  • On carefully observing, you will find Pi in nature. It is said to be in our cells, the pupils in our eyes, a rainbow and many other things in nature.
  • Pi is never-ending and never-repeating number and it is determined to 12 trillion digits after the decimal points.
  • This year on Pi Day, Google employee Emma Haruka created a new world record of calculating Pi up to 22.4 trillion digits long.
