Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, or SSY, is a savings plan by the government just for girl children. It started under the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” mission, and it really helps parents save money for their daughter’s education or marriage. The best thing about this plan is that it gives a very good interest rate and when the money matures, you don’t have to pay any tax on it.

That’s why so many parents choose SSY as a long-term plan. You can open it if your daughter is less than 10 years old. You just need her birth certificate and some ID and address proof of the parent or guardian. This is one of the easiest and safest ways to save for your child’s future.

How to start Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana account?

You can open this account at any post office or in banks like SBI, HDFC, or ICICI. Only a parent or legal guardian can open it, and they have to manage it till the girl turns 18. You need your KYC documents like PAN or Aadhaar to open it. You also need to fill up a form and give ₹250 or more as the first deposit.

Every year, you can add more money, but not more than ₹1.5 lakh in a year. You can add money whenever you want during the year, in small amounts too. But it’s important to make sure you add something every year for 15 years. If you forget, the account will stop giving interest.

After 21 years from the date you open it, the account will mature. But you can also take money out earlier if your daughter wants to get married or go for higher studies after turning 18. The interest is counted on the lowest amount in the account between the 5th and last date of every month. That’s how they calculate the final return.

What makes SSY better?

SSY is better because not only does it give high returns, but it also gives you tax savings. If you put money in it, you can get a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh every year under Section 80C of income tax rules. And when the plan ends, all the money you get, including the interest, is tax-free. That’s why it’s better than most other savings plans. Right now in 2025, it gives 8.2% interest, which is one of the highest among all small savings schemes. That helps you grow your money better over the years.

To see how much money you have in the account, you can check the passbook or use internet banking if your bank allows it. You can also deposit money at the branch or post office, or use online options.

If you miss a year, the government gives you one more year to catch up and restart the interest. After your daughter turns 18, you can even shift the account in her name, and she can manage it on her own.
