After accounts followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted vicious and abusive messages celebrating the murder of a journalist, Gauri Lankesh, his party has said that the PM “has never blocked or unfollowed anyone on Twitter” and his following someone is not a ‘character certificate.’

The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party said the BJP’s explanation is transparent. “While we fight trolls, PM Modi ignites them,” said Congress in a statement.

A section of social media was heated over the fact that PM has not stopped following people who vilified Lankesh after her killing on Tuesday. #BlockNarendraModi was a trending topic on Twitter on Thursday.

The PM’s following of certain accounts “is not in any way a guarantee of how a person would conduct himself”, the BJP’s IT cell said. Modi has not unfollowed either Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal regardless of his insulting comments or Rahul Gandhi although his being accused of a corruption scam.

Lankesh was killed at her home in Bengaluru. People who attacked her on Twitter after killing are BJP followers.
