Puducherry Liberation Day 2023: In the Indian union territory of Puducherry, November 1 is annually observed as Puducherry Liberation Day. Throughout a substantial portion of the 17th century, the French East India Company exercised dominion over Puducherry. Pondicherry was the former name for Puducherry, which was the capital of French India during the colonial period. In addition to Puducherry, French India also included the colonies of Chandernagor, Mahé, Yanam, Karaikal, and Masulipatam. On this date in 1954, French India was transferred to the Republic of India, which is commemorated on this holiday.

Puducherry Liberation Day History

Puducherry, located on the southeastern coast of India, has no documented history dating back to the dawn of time. Conversely, historical records of Puducherry predate the advent of the Dutch, Portuguese, English, and French.

The Puducherry region was under the dominion of the Pallava Kingdom of Kanchipuram in the fourth century A.D. In the centuries that followed, a string of southern dynasties, starting with the Chola of Thanjavur in the 10th century A.D. and ending with the Pandya Kingdom in the 13th century, ruled over Puducherry. Up until 1638, when the Sultan of Bijapur overthrew Gingee, the Vijayanagar Empire held sway over the majority of southern India following a brief invasion under the command of northern Muslim monarchs.

In 1674, the French East India Company founded Pondicherry as a commercial hub. Over time, this colony developed into the preeminent French stronghold in India. Due to the competing interests of Dutch and British trading corporations in engaging in trade with India, these European nations became entangled in conflicts that extended to the Indian subcontinent. In the years that followed, sovereignty of Pondicherry changed frequently. 1693 saw the Dutch conquest of Puducherry; however, it was reclaimed by France through the Treaty of Ryswick in 1699. During their occupation of India in the late 1850s, the British allowed the French to retain their colonies there. Pondicherry, Mahe, Yanam, Karaikal, and Chandernagar were all territories of French India until 1954.

1947 saw the initiation of the unification of France’s Indian territories with former British India. The de jure membership of French India in the Indian Union did not occur until 1962. The regions formerly under French colonial rule in India were de facto transferred to the Republic of India on November 1, 1954. Following that, Puducherry was elevated to the status of a union territory and is presently an integral part of India.
