Rajasthan: To curb child marriage, wedding cards to print bride & groom’s date of birth

Ahead of the festival Akshay Tritiya, the decision is taken by the administration

In India, among the top 12 states, Rajasthan ranks high where there is a prevalence of child marriage, As per a report of 2018 by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

Now in order to curb the social evil of child marriage mainly in the Bundi district of Rajasthan, the district administration has ordered to print birth dates of the bride and the groom on the wedding cards.

Not only this, but the administration has also directed that the invitation cards should carry a warning that says child marriage is a punishable offense. Ahead of the festival Akshay Tritiya which is widely celebrated in the state, the decision is taken by the administration.

On the auspicious festival of Akshay Tritiya, many children in Rajasthan are married off before they turn 18 and as per the Hindu Calendar, the festival will be celebrated on May 7.

Also the authorities have made teams of school principals, land inspectors, gram sewak and Anganwadi workers to keep a check on the happenings that would indicate wedding preparations like whitewash, henna on children’s hands, playing  of bands, priests bookings, etc. they have also been directed to keep an eye on the attendance of the children in schools. On their respective areas, they will keep a keen eye so that the social evil could be prevented.

The authorities have said that legal action will be taken promptly against the ones involved in the practice of social evil.

The printing press owners have also been directed by the district administration to take the birth certificates of the bride and groom and to make sure that their dates are printed on the wedding card along with warning as directed by them.
