Redmi Celebrates 10 Years

Redmi Celebrates 10 Years: Redmi, Xiaomi’s budget smartphone sub-brand, is commemorating its tenth anniversary. Executives of the company have taken to social media to announce the birth date of the first Redmi smartphone.

Redmi Celebrates 10 Years: Hongmi was born on July 31, 2013 to Redmi.

On Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website), Xiaomi General Manager Wang Hua revealed that Redmi’s first smartphone was introduced on this date ten years ago. The executive had also participated in a special press conference without a projector a decade ago. He described the introduction of Hongmi, which is essentially the Redmi 1 smartphone. The first smartphone from the Chinese tech giant was presented to a select set of media members.

Lei Jun (founder of Xiaomi) and China Mobile executives were also present at the time. Soon after this conference, the device’s release on the market broke new records. With the release of this phone, the company altered the perception of smartphones under 1,000 Yuan (approximately 140 USD) in China. However, its impact on the smartphone market did not stop there, as the device was also ubiquitous on the global market the following year.

Recall that the first Redmi smartphone featured a quad core MediaTek MT6589T processor and 3G networking capabilities. It featured a 4.7-inch screen with 720p resolution and 312 PPI. The device had only 4GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM. The rear of the device featured an 8-megapixel camera, while the front was equipped with a 1.3-megapixel facial camera. The device is powered by a 2,000mAh battery and runs on MIUI 5, which is based on the Android 4.2 operating system.
