Days after an NDTV journalist and his family were forced to chant Jai Shri Ram by some Bajrang Dal activists, the JD(U) in a tweet said that action has been taken in the case and that such incidents won’t be tolerated anymore.

The incident happened on June 28th, when Ataharuddin Munne Bharti, a journalist with the NDTV, was travelling with his parents and wife to Samastipur district via Muzaffarpur when he encountered the Bajrang Dal activists. The men threatened to kill them if the family did not chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’. Scared, Bharti and family did as they were told and escaped.

“They had sticks. They looked at my family in the car. My wife was in a veil and my father wears a beard. They started chanting Jai Shri Ram loudly. Two youths came and told us to chant Jai Shri Ram or they would torch our car. Gripped by fear, we said Jai Shri Ram and were allowed to go”,  Ataharuddin said.

The journalist later informed Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, of the incident on Twitter.

The police are currently investigating the case.

Muzaffarpur SSP Vivek Kumar said: “I had no knowledge of it till I got a call from the police headquarters after instructions from the CM House to look into the allegations.”

The incident happened a day before Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, publicly condemned the violence unleashed by cow vigilantes in various parts of India.
