Samsung Unveils Massive 4TB 990 Pro NVMe SSD: Until now, all of Samsung’s consumer NVMe drives had a maximum capacity of 2TB, despite the fact that the company’s SSDs are consistently ranked among the best. Recently, Samsung announced intentions to release a 4TB version of its popular 990 Pro solid-state drive. Unknown at this time are the product’s release date and price, but it represents the company’s entry into the market for rapid, high-capacity consumer hard drives.
The new variant, designated MZ-V9P4T0BW, will be a PCIe 4.0 SSD with the same performance as its 2TB predecessor, achieving sequential read rates of approximately 7.5 GB/s and write speeds of approximately 7 GB/s. Additionally, Samsung verifies read and write IOPs of 1,400K and 1,550K, respectively. The 4TB 990 Pro will likely be an excellent option for storing a sizable collection of titles on a PlayStation 5 or computer.
As prices decrease and major game releases continue to utilise more space, more users may begin searching for 4TB drives. Each of Baldur’s Gate 3, Starfield, and Forza Motorsport requires approximately 130GB. Other forthcoming titles, such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III and Alan Wake II, may have comparable storage requirements.
Other available 4TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives range from approximately $170 to $350, though Samsung has not yet provided a price. Assuming it maintains the 2TB model’s present lowest price of 8.50 cents per gigabyte, a 4TB 990 Pro will likely be priced close to the latter. In addition, including a heatsink typically increases the price of an SSD, but the 2TB 990 Pro is oddly less expensive with its heatsink integrated. It is unclear how the current SSD market environment may influence the company’s decision regarding the impending model.
Early 2023: The Best SSDs and PC Storage
Oversupply in the NAND flash market has pushed down the price of 1TB and 2TB SSDs throughout the year, and this trend may continue through September, whereas 4TB drives have experienced much less price volatility. The only exception is the MSI Spatium M461, whose price has decreased by $50 since April.
Samsung has yet to enter the market for PCIe 5.0 consumer SSDs. Companies such as Crucial and Gigabyte advertise read velocities exceeding 10 GB/s for products utilising the new standard, but the market is still in its infancy. When PCIe 5.0 motherboards become more prevalent, it is likely that Samsung and Western Digital will introduce their own products.
