Save the Frogs Day 2023: Date, History, Activities and Facts

Save the Frogs Day 2023: Save the Frogs Day is an annual campaign to bring attention to the plight of frog species around the globe. This year’s event occurs on April 28. It also promotes appreciation and celebration of the amphibians’ role in maintaining the balance of nature. Frogs are in danger of extinction, so it is up to us to ensure that they continue to peacefully roam the planet. Let’s take advantage of this day to raise awareness about this endangered species.

HISTORY OF SAVE THE FROGS DAY

Save the Frogs Day was established in 2009 by Dr. Kerry Kriger of the organisation Save the Frogs. This holiday was established to promote amphibian education and conservation efforts. Since the Triassic period, frogs have been a part of the Earth’s ecosystem and can be found everywhere. Not only do they play an important role in maintaining the balance of the global ecosystem, but their croaks also contribute to the ambiance of nature and in some areas signal the beginning of spring.

The little amphibians, of which there are more than 5,000 species, devour insects like mosquitoes voraciously, thereby helping to maintain human health and comfort. However, similar to numerous other animal species on Earth, amphibians are also endangered. According to Dr. Kriger, the primary threats amphibians face today are habitat destruction, disease, pollution, pesticides, and climate change, all of which threaten to hasten their global extinction. Up to 914 species of frogs are threatened with extinction, and up to 200 species have become extinct since the 1970s.

In addition, there are few regulations prohibiting the transportation of infected frogs, which can cause problems in unfamiliar environments and for those who keep them as pets or consume them as sustenance. Save the Frogs and scientists in 58 countries hold presentations and seminars at local schools, groups, and community centres during the holiday to raise awareness of frog conservation by highlighting the threats they face and presenting ways to contribute to their conservation. Thus, Save the Frogs Day raises awareness about the dangers that frogs encounter in their natural habitats and emphasises the consequences of a world without frogs.

Indonesia is the world’s greatest exporter of frog meat, sending more than 5,000 tonnes to various countries annually.

Why is Save the Frogs Day significant?

It increases awareness of frog-related issues.

As their plight is not as visible as that of other species, many individuals may be unaware of the plight of amphibians or the effects of having few or no frogs in the environment. Save the Frogs Day raises awareness of the issue and focuses attention on what humans can do to assist.

Important bioindicators are frogs

Because frogs can survive in confined areas in almost any type of environment, their abundance is indicative of a region’s habitability. Their sensitivity to pollution due to their moist skin can help humans navigate and reside in certain areas by revealing environmental conditions. Consequently, they are known as ‘bioindicators’.

Their noises colour the atmosphere.

The harmonious croaking of frogs is one of the most relaxing noises you can hear in nature, especially at dusk or at night. Their music brings nature to life, and without them, such environments would never be the same.
