Sawan Shivratri is celebrated in the Holy Month of Sawan and is often confused with Mahashivratri which is celebrated in the Hindu month of Phalguna in Feb-March.

The month of Sawan is celebrated with much fervor and enthusiasm and Sawan Shivratri falls around August or September each year. This year the festival is observed today on July 30.

Significance of Sawan Shivratri

It is one of the most significant festivals for the Shiv devotees. The significance behind it varies from legends to legends. As per some, Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati on this day while some say that in the auspicious month of Sawan, Lord Shiva along with Goddess Parvati, Lord Kartikeya and Lord Ganesha descend upon the earth to be amid their devotees.

On this day, the devotees wake up early and go to temples to make offerings to Lord Shiva. People also perform Mahabhishekam where they pour a holy mix of Ganga Jal, milk and ghee on the top of Shiva Linga. Some of the devotees also observe fast for the whole day. Most of them consume only fruits and milk while some of them eat satvik food through the day.

There are devotees who also indulge in keeping Nirjala Upvas and it is not recommended for old people, pregnant women, children and those who are sick.
