Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to former Finance Minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram in INX Media Case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). However, the top court has asked former Finance Minister to surrender his passport & provide bail Bond of Rs 2 lakh along with two sureties
SC also restrained P Chidambaram from giving press interviews or making statements with regard to the case.
A three-judge bench of the apex court comprising Justices R Banumathi, AS Bopanna and Hrishikesh Roy pronounced its verdict hearing the plea by Chidambaram seeking bail in the INX Media money laundering case. Reading the judgement, Justice As Bopanna said that economic offences will fall in the category of grave offences.
CBI had registered a corruption case in this regard in May 2017. Later that year, the ED also lodged a money laundering case.
The Congress leader was first arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 21 in the INX Media corruption case but was granted bail by the Supreme Court two months later. He was arrested by the ED in the money laundering case on October 16.
