Short power nap can boost creativity, health of employees

A 20-minute power nap in the afternoon is great for employees as it boosts creativity and problem-solving ability, as per a new study.  According to scientists from the University of Leeds in England, the short-period nap could also lessen the risks of diabetes, heart problems, and depression.

Such problems occur mainly due to the lack of adequate sleep.

“The loss of an hour in bed is particularly detrimental to individuals that already struggle with their sleep,” said lead study author Nerina Ramlakhan.  “If you are one of the 25% of the nation that gets less than five hours’ sleep a night, this time change could see you drop down to as little as four hours, which is a dangerously low amount.”

Thus, the bosses should allow their staff to take a short nap at the workplace as it can make a huge difference, suggest researchers, as per a report in the Independent.

The study also showed that taking a nap between 2 pm and 4 pm is more effective.

Naps have been scientifically proven to heighten the creativity and problem-solving ability. They can even rebalance the immune system that indeed will lead to staff taking lesser sick leaves.

“Allowing staff to indulge in a nap during the working day might sound unusual, but considering the country will be losing an hour of sleep over the weekend it’s a fair request,” Dr Ramlakhan said.
