St John’s Day 2023: St. John’s Day in Venezuela, or Fiesta De San Juan in Venezuela, is on June 24. Saint John’s Day is a predominantly Christian holiday honouring John the Baptist. Fiesta De San Juan is an unquestionably important day for those who revere St. John. Those versed in Christian theology recognise him as the prophet who foretold the arrival of Jesus. However, the event is also a celebration in Venezuela, and it lasts for three days. During these three exhilarating days, the Venezuelan coast resounds with infectious African drum rhythms, and people dressed to the nines wave colourful kerchiefs and dance into the night. Fiesta de San Juan combines the sacred with the profane, the solemn with the carnal, and numerous traditions into one unforgettable celebration.
HISTORY OF ST JOHN’S DAY (VENEZUELA)
St. John’s Day, also known as the Fiesta of San Juan, is celebrated annually on June 24 in the littoral regions of Venezuela, where the majority of Afro-Venezuelans reside. It combines the solemnity of Catholic rituals with the vitality and mysticism of African traditions. Throughout the city, individuals typically bear an image of Saint John the Baptist on their shoulders. The procession is followed by a mass featuring special rituals. As soon as the prayers are over, the cities resound with the beat of drums, a rhythm that could only have originated in Africa.
The festival is distinctive due to its multilayered cultural roots. Due to the influence of the Spanish, the day was a typical Catholic celebration honouring a saint: St. John the Baptist. However, St. John’s Day also provided slave communities with a safe space to commemorate their African heritage through music, art, and dance.
From the 17th to the 19th centuries, African slaves laboured ceaselessly on Venezuela’s extensive cocoa and coffee plantations. Except for three days per year when their owners granted them time off for the San Juan Festival, they laboured nonstop. It was an annual celebration where overworked labourers from the entire Venezuelan coast would gather for three days of dancing, singing, eating, resting, and doing whatever they desired. Everyone partied until they were exhausted. They would make the most of it because the three days were quickly coming to an end — a mindset that is still prevalent in celebrations today.
During the festivities, everyone cools off with ice or, even better, a bottle of rum or whisky. During the festival, “If St. John has it, St. John gives it to you” is a common refrain. Therefore, if you have a strong desire for something, now is an excellent time to ask St. John for it.
