State CTC Eligibility: New York is contributing $350 million toward the maximum $330 in Child Tax Credits for each qualifying child. However, when will residents of the state be allowed to utilize the funds?
The state of 19,57 million people will start receiving cheques for low-income households on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
What is the credit for child taxes?
For taxpayers with dependent children under the age of 17, the current child tax credit is a nonrefundable tax benefit. The credit may reduce your tax liability dollar for dollar. Certain taxpayers may be eligible for partial reimbursement of the benefit under the “additional child tax credit” program.
Taxpayers and their children must meet certain requirements in order to be qualified. These include the child’s age and relationship to the person making the claim.
Because the benefit goes out for high earners, taxpayers must also comply with specific income requirements. If your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) surpasses the threshold for your filing status, you can receive a lesser credit or be declared ineligible.
State CTC Eligibility: Who is eligible?
According to CBS News, parents who timely filed their taxes in 2023 and were eligible for the Empire State Child Tax Credit would get a cheque in the mail. As long as they earn less than $110,001 for a married couple and $75,001 for a single parent annually, they are eligible to do this.
-
Age: Your child must have been under the age of 17 at the end of the tax year.
-
Relationship: The child you claim must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister or a descendant of any of those people (e.g., a grandchild, niece or nephew).
-
Dependent status: You must be able to properly claim the child as a dependent. The child also cannot file a joint tax return, unless they file it to claim a refund of withheld income taxes or estimated taxes paid.
-
Residency: The child you’re claiming must have lived with you for at least half the year (there are some exceptions to this rule).
-
Financial support: You must have provided at least half of the child’s support during the last year. In other words, if your qualified child financially supported themselves for more than six months, they’re likely considered not qualified.
-
Citizenship: Per the IRS, your child must be a “U.S. citizen, U.S. national or U.S. resident alien,” and must hold a valid Social Security number.
-
Income: Parents or caregivers claiming the credit also typically can’t exceed certain income requirements. Depending on how much your income exceeds that threshold, the credit gets incrementally reduced until it is eliminated.
Governor Kathy Hochul declared on July 31 that “one million New York families will be receiving a check in the mail by the end of August,” according to Marca. Depending on the size and income of their family, some individuals will receive $330 for each child. You have $1,000 in your pocket and three children.
Child Tax Credit 2024 Payment July: Is the IRS reinstating 2021 child tax credits scheme in 2024?
“To receive this money, New Yorkers need not take any action. No paperwork, no conditions to fulfill. It will just happen to come to them.”
The majority leader of the Senate, Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, said, “My first advocacy was down at City Hall.” “Begging them not to kick my child out of day care because I made $7000 a year.”
The exact amount is part of Governor Hochul’s plan to help low-income households throughout the state of New York eradicate poverty; it ranges from 25% to 100% of the Child Tax Credit in 2023, depending on family income.
